A Palestinian swimmer who will be competing in the Olympic Games in Paris says her goal is "to stand for those people who can't."

Eight Palestinian athletes are travelling to the French capital, including swimmer Valerie Tarazi.

The 24-year-old was born in the US, although her grandfather was from Gaza where she still has family.

Speaking at an event in the West Bank city of Ramallah ahead of the Palestinian delegation's departure for Paris, she said: "We stand with the flag to represent the millions of Palestinians around the world who have been silenced, censored and don't have a voice."

At the same event, Palestinian Olympic Committee head Jibril Rajoub said around 400 athletes, coaches and sporting officials have been killed or wounded in the conflict in Gaza since last October.

Palestine has sent teams to compete at each Summer Olympics since 1996.

In a post on Instagram Ms Tarazi said Palestine's participation in the Paris Olympics from 26 July to 11 August will be "peaceful and profound."
