Two separate Status Yellow rain warnings are in effect covering 13 counties as heavy and persistent rain is forecast until early tomorrow morning.

Heavy rain could lead to localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility at times.

A Status Yellow warning covering Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Leitrim and Roscommon is in effect until 4am tomorrow.

A second Status Yellow rain warning for Kildare, Laois, Offaly and Wicklow is in effect until midnight.

A third warning was in effect for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary and Waterford and expired at 4pm.

Met Éireann said that rain in Munster and south Leinster will spread northwards and extend into Ulster during the day, becoming heavy at times in parts of Leinster and Ulster.

The rain will continue overnight over Ulster, north Connacht and the northern half of Leinster.

Met Éireann meteorologist Gerry Murphy said a front is bringing heavy rainfall to the east of the country, although not all areas under the weather warnings will get huge amounts of rainfall.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, he said "some of the rain is heavy, some of the rain will cause some localised flooding and disruption to some people, especially people on holidays, it will make for an unpleasant day for many."

Mr Murphy said the midlands, further to the east and north, will experience the wetter weather, while the rain will be lighter and patchier tomorrow in north Leinster and Ulster.

He said the weather will pick up from Thursday, but that so far the summer has brought below-average temperatures.
