A man in his 40s has died in Dublin after he was struck by a stolen car that failed to remain at the scene.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision on the Coast Road in Baldoyle at around 1am.

The man who died was a pedestrian.

The Garda Press Office confirmed that the car involved in the hit-and-run was stolen.

It had been spotted by a marked garda vehicle yesterday evening, and the matter has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out.

The road was closed for a foresnic examination.

Witnesses, including road users who have may have camera footage from the area, are being asked to contact Howth Garda Station on 01 666 4900, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Baldoyle Community Hall is closed to allow gardaí to carry out their investigation and is expected to reopen tomorrow.
