Ireland exported €53 million worth of dual-use products to Israel between October and June, the Department of Enterprise has confirmed.

Dual-use items can be used in either civilian or military settings and they must receive a special export licence before leaving Ireland.

The export figure was confirmed by Minister of State for Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary, in a letter to Green Party TD Patrick Costello.

The majority of the exports from Ireland to Israel were ICT hardware and software goods.

They are branded dual-use because they "make use of strong encryption for data protection purposes," Mr Calleary said.

The minister said the Department of Enterprise will deny an export licence application if there are concerns that the goods will be used for a military purpose.

The department can also refuse a licence if the exporter does not give sufficient information about how the product will be used.

Minister Calleary added that investigations are undertaken where there is a potential breach of the Dual Use Regulation, and the matter is referred to gardaí if a criminal offence is suspected.
