Damian McCarthy's award-winning horror Oddity has been acquired by Wildcard Distribution, who will release the film in Irish cinemas on August 30.

The news comes the same day as the film's Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh on Friday night and ahead of its US theatrical release later this month.

Oddity follows a blind medium who uncovers the truth behind her sister's death with the help of a frightening wooden mannequin.

The cast includes Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Carolyn Bracken (An Cailín Ciúin), Tadhg Murphy (The Northman), Caroline Menton (Altar Boys), Steve Wall (Dune: Part Two), Johnny French (The Rock in the Sea), Joe Rooney (Killinaskully), Shane Whisker (The Pope’s Exorcist), and Ivan de Wergifosse (The Last Duel).

Since its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this year, where it won the Midnighter Audience Award, the film has gone on to win the Audience Award at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans and was nominated for Best Feature Film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland.

Another new Irish film, Fidil Ghorm, opened to rapturous applause at the Galway Film Fleadh on Wednesday.

When 10 year old Molly (Edith Lawlor) meets Malachy an old fiddle player (Barry McGovern) with 'magic in his hands' she is convinced that with his help she can wake her father from a coma.

The film was directed by former RTÉ producer/director Anne McCabe, known for Check Up, the Today Tonight Kerry Babies case, Fair City and the 1996 TV film, JJ Biker, starring Brendan Gleeson.
