The American Embassy in Ballsbridge opened its doors 60 years ago, on May 23rd, 1964. I've always loved that building, so I went to see its creator John Johansen in New York, back around the turn of the Millennium.
He was an old man, almost alone, when I called by the tall, dusty office off Union Square, full of slanting, greenish light bustin' through the shades of other days. Old New York. He still came down from upstate to the city by train once a week...
