Out & Proud is back on RTÉ Radio 1 for a second season and this time presenter Trevor Keegan is discussing key moments and milestones in life through the LGBTQI+ experience.
Over six episodes, there will be chats and reflections on relationships, parenthood, old age and more. The series begins though, with that tricky yet exhilarating time when we step into adulthood – finding your tribe, exploring queer spaces and claiming your confidence.
With his Leaving Cert finally over, 18 year old Jamie Feery Canning talks about his experience of growing up as a young gay man in Ireland, including taking self-defence class in stilettos, dealing with bullies and the importance of visibility online and off.
Recent research by Trinity College Dublin and BeLonGTo, found that the mental health of LGBTQI+ people between the ages of 14 and 18 had declined significantly since 2016. It’s no surprise then that sometimes school can be difficult for LGBTQI+ students.
Trevor visited the Youthreach Centre in Ballymun which offers alternative pathways to further education for young people who for myriad reasons have left mainstream school. There he met teacher Alisha Doody and student Alisha, both members of the LGBTQIA+ community, who discussed their experience of working and learning there.
Trevor also welcomed Emma Loo and Dylan Mellody-Kelly from Na Gaeil Aeracha GAA club to studio where they chatted about practical ways to improve inclusivity and how important and empowering it can be when you find your tribe.
As the world's first explicitly LGBTQ+ inclusive GAA team, it’s no surprise that they’re always welcoming to new members.
Listen to Out & Proud Tuesday nights at 10pm on RTÉ Radio 1 and the RTÉ Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
