In the early years of the 20th century, Ireland was a place of conflict. In this interactive series, photographer David Cleary returns to locations captured on film a century ago and takes new photographs showing how those settings have changed - or not.
In this photo from the National Library of Ireland's collection, taken in 1916 during the Rising, British soldiers approach a car on Mount Street Bridge crossing Dublin's Grand Canal. The area saw fierce fighting during the Rising, which may explain the soldier's wary stances. In the background can be seen posters for Bass beer, several Dublin theatres and bread. Behind the billboard, the corner of the Ringsend gasometer is still visible, though today it's concealed by buildings and trees.
