In 1922, Ireland was once more a battlefield, as the Civil War saw conflict break out all over the country. In this interactive series, photographer David Cleary returns to locations captured on film back in 1922 and takes new photographs showing how those settings have changed - or not.
This 1922 image from the National Library of Ireland was taken during the Battle of Dublin and shows an armoured Rolls Royce car at the top of Henry Street, facing O'Connell Street. The car is topped with an effigy of anti-Treaty commander Rory O'Connor - who would be executed several months later. Keen eyed visitors to the National Library's excellent Flickr have identified the National Army officer on the right as Captain Patrick 'Specky' Griffin. While the side of the GPO building on the right has been changed over the last century with the addition of shop fronts, the buildings on the far side of O'Connell Street, just to the left of the effigy, remain unchanged.
